Training Leaders & Building the American Muslim Civic Infrastructure

Of the 511,000 elected positions in the United States, fewer than 220 are filled by Muslims. Jetpac trains American Muslims and minority allies to run for office and organize our communities at all levels.

This Ramadan, help Jetpac achieve our 2018 goal to train a record 100 American Muslims to run for office and educate 250 American Muslim youth on the importance of civics.

The Jetpac Story

Days after the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, Jetpac launched an “open call” to American Muslims: If you want change, start organizing your local community. This sparked tremendous response—over 100 American Muslims and minority allies applied to Jetpac’s Public Service Fellowship program, ready to learn community organizing, advocacy, and social impact skills.

In 2015, Jetpac (Justice Education Technology Political Advocacy Center) was launched on the heels of Founding President Nadeem Mazen’s historic Cambridge, MA City Council re­-election. Through a grassroots organizing strategy and the creation of semi-automated fundraising and outreach technologies, Nadeem’s campaign staff (who became the Jetpac team) increased Muslim voter turnout in Cambridge by 300% and gave Nadeem the highest vote total of all 26 candidates in one of the Commonwealth’s most competitive races. Today, we train people from minority communities who want to make a difference by running for office. We also teach youth across the country about the overlaps of civics and their Muslim faith.

Our philosophy of change is inspired by the future leaders we work with every day. While we provide the knowledge and advice, our students and Fellows bring the innovation, compassion, and dedication that will transform them into effective policy makers, whether in the next election cycle or over the next decade.

Programs

Our programs include a Public Service Fellowship for adult professionals who want to learn how to organize locally and run for office, an AP-accredited U.S. Government and Politics course to educate high school students on the application of their faith in civic leadership, and a Youth Civic Education Program, which combines elements of the Public Service Fellowship and the AP curriculum into an easily-scalable weekend model for underserved youth.

Successes

So far, 12 elected seats have been won by our 29 Fellowship graduates, who have accumulated over 60,000 votes. Jetpac Fellows engaged with more than 40,000 households on issues affecting their communities in 2017 alone.
